If you hear loud noises in your pipes, it is usually not a good thing. A common problem that makes a lot of noise is called a water hammer. This is the name for the effect caused by water having nowhere to go after you close the faucet. It will bang against the walls of the pipes until it settles down. Usually, this is prevented by something in your plumbing system called an air-chamber, but these can fail when they fill up with water for some reason or another.
So, does this mean that you have to call a plumber to have the problem fixed? Well, you could do that, and it is important to fix this problem since it can damage your pipes over time, but it is also possible to fix it yourself. What you do is open all the faucets in your home, turn of the main water supply, and watch all the water drain from your pipes. After this is done, you can close all the faucets and turn the water supply back on. The air-chamber should now be drained and your plumbing system should be working like it is supposed to.
